The Cortland Homer After school
Mentorship Program is a joint efforts between
the Dept of Physical Education at SUNY Cortland,
J.M. McDonald Sports Complex, Cortland City School
District and Homer School District.
The purpose of
Project CHAMP is to create an after school fitness
and academic mentorship program for children grades
K-6 in the Cortland/Homer and surrounding school
districts.
Students in grades K - 6 will
receive
help on homework skills, nutrition, reading, daily
physical activity, and lifetime fitness through
games and activities at the McDonald Center.
Some of the
goals of Project CHAMP are to:

Increase the physical activity levels
of Cortland/Homer youth (K-6th grade)
·
Improve the quality of after school nutrition for
Cortland Homer area youth through the “Smart Snack
Attack” program
·
Provide quality mentorship experiences for college
level students interested in working with youth
through weekly physical activity programs
·
Provide mentorship for Cortland Homer area youth
during after school based experiences
·
Impact and decrease the overweight and obesity
levels of Cortland Homer area youth
·
Conduct and disseminate practical action-based
research on best practices toward addressing the
physical activity and nutritional needs of all area
youth to include those with disabilities
·
Develop comprehensive web site to promote Project
CHAMP, inform campus and community of up coming
events, provide resources for students on health
related nutrition options as well as provide program
ideas for student/mentor activities.
